Not For Those With a Weak Stomach

Yesterday, Jack was helping the neighbors with their yard fire and his pants caught on fire. Jack has been very brave and complaints have been minor. We are grateful that our neighbor is a doctor, and that the first aid was administered so well. These are second degree burns with a small area of third degree right in the middle. Right now, Jack is excited about the possibility of a cool scar, but I think this excitement will wane when we run out of Lortab and as he goes through weeks of healing and discomfort.

Our neighbor "THE DOKTOR" came over to help us clean the wound and change the dressing. Debridement is never a word you want to hear when you are discussing your medical conditioning. Basically, as the dead tissue decomposes, you have to scrape it away before it becomes putrid and causes infection. Jack is tougher than we thought, and handled it like a stud.

If you can believe it, this looked even worse in real life. Jack was in fact very brave although looking at his leg did make him a little sick.

Our neighbor Phil dropped and rolled Jack and then cut his pant leg off, his synthetic liner inside his pants is what caught fire. A spark went up his pant leg. Ouch! Chris posted the blog.

Oh Jack, that must hurt, it hurts just to look at it. Follow the doctors orders so it heals. A long time ago your uncles were playing with matches and Uncle Steve's jacket started to catch fire, it melted a little bit on his neck, Uncle Tony put snow on it (smart for a kid of about 7 or 8) and that was good because it stopped the melting and was good for the skin too. I don't think there is even a scar. But just another reminder that you need to be real careful around fire of any kind. I told Grandpa and he is going to look at the blog when he can get on the internet. Love you.
